Moving Beyond Charleston: It’s Time To Furl That Flag

-

The horrific massacre at the black Baptist church in Charleston has led to a firestorm of protest and calls for the removal of all things Confederate (“Liberals Still Getting the South All Wrong,” PostOpinion, June 24).

I certainly would not feel comfortable with Nazi flags and memorabilia “proudly” being displayed in my home town.

I would like to suggest the removal of one other reminder of the post-Confederate South.

I’m referring to something whose history is replete with members of the KKK being among its most honored members.

It supported segregation and was responsible for some of the ugliest race confrontations in American history.

This relic of the past has also kept many Americans in this country dependent upon the government.

I’m writing, of course, about the history of the Democratic Party. Jack Kaufman

I can see taking down the flag at the South Carolina state capital, as it’s not the state’s official flag.

I can’t understand, however, why businesses are being pressured into banning the sale of the Confederate flag.

What’s next — books, movies and newspapers?

Maybe next month President Obama will have a bookburning in Washington, DC.

Looks like history does repeat itself.

Except this time it’s re peating itself under the guise of hope and change.

Gov. Nikki Haley’s call for the removal of the Confederate flag from state grounds is a positive gesture.

The Confederate flag represents a divisive image.

Perhaps, after all of this time, the bond between the different states and their people will fuse even deeper.

The amazing family that is South Carolina has gone a long way to demonstrate to our nation and the world that love defeats hate.

God and family can carry you through the toughest times.

We need to spend less time fostering class, race and sexist warfare and more time embracing the rich diversity that makes this nation great. Deirdre Harvey
