B’klyn man eyes riches selling ‘.nyc’ properties
A Brooklyn accountant is hoping to spark a gold rush in Big Apple cyber real estate.
Recep Ozdincer dropped about $3,500 last year to buy 112 “.nyc” domain names — like billiard.nyc, halfmarathon.nyc, highfrequencytrading.nyc and rodents.nyc — and on Thursday kicked off an online auction for all of them.
Ozdincer, who paid $31 apiece for the names, will run the auction for 28 more days.
“I really have no idea how much I’ll attract,” he told The Post — although like most folks flipping New York City real estate, even the virtual kind, he’s hoping to strike it rich.
Ozdincer is telling potential buyers they may not need all 112 names — but they can, in turn, flip those they don’t need for a profit.
“I worked really diligently on choosing the names,” said Ozdincer, who works at Institu tional Investor magazine.
Cityspecific domain suffixes became available last year.
In May 2014, the “.nyc” domain had a “soft” launch, when a limited number of registered trademark holders — mostly businesses — could apply for an address.
In October, sale of the “.nyc” suffix was opened to all New Yorkers.
As of Friday, 79,867 people had registered “.nyc” addresses, according to Softnik Technologies’ Domain Punch.
It is one of the fastestgrowing city domain names.
“I was able to buy 95 percent of the names I wanted,” Ozdincer said.
He says he has no ethical dilemma about buying names to resell, which he is doing for the first time.
“You can’t blame anyone for buying something,” he said.
The auction is being held on flippa.com.
