RG Schwartz working on confidence after ‘blowout’

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

Geoff Schwartz never before revealed what exactly happened to his left leg last season when he went down and out in Jacksonville. It cost him the final four games and triggered an intense and lengthy rehabilitation.

Schwartz is back, moving in as the starting right guard as the Giants open training camp. He returns after not only breaking his left ankle but also, he said, “blowing out’’ his deltoid ligament on the inside of his left leg.

“I never really said anything because what’s the point of explaining all that?” Schwartz told The Post on Saturday.

Schwartz was surprised how many snaps he took in Friday’s first practice, and it looked as if he took a full load again Saturday. Last offseason, the Giants signed him to a fouryear, $16.8 million deal, but his first year was a washout. He dislocated his right big toe in the preseason and missed the first 10 games. He started two games but didn’t make it out of the second game before getting carted off against the Jaguars with the ankle injury. The Giants restructured his contract for this season, dropping his base salary, and Schwartz will be able to recoup the money if he meets playingtime incentives.

“Personally I need to kind of get going, I need to play, for my own confidence,’’ Schwartz said. “I know I can play, even last year the game and a quarter I played in, I played well, considering I hadn’t practiced much at all. I just have to make it through camp healthy and get stronger.’’

Coach Tom Coughlin on Saturday’s practice: “I didn’t think too many people on offense showed me anything.’’ … Odell Beckham Jr. had a rare drop, failing to come down with the ball after leaping with Dominique RodgersCromartie. … TE Matt LaCosse was waived/injured.

CB Prince Amukamara took umbrage with Beckham’s evaluation of Friday’s catch and zigzag sprint into the end zone. Beckham said he did not think Amukamara was a factor on the play.

“It’s funny you brought that up because we’ve been arguing about that,’’ Amukamara said. “It was on film, and I think I would have got him because he did cut back. He just said, ‘Like you touched me and we’re not playing twohand touch’ or whatever. I told him, ‘All right, next time I’m going to give it to you. Let me clarify that: I’m going to hit you.’ ’’

Dr. Scott Rodeo was named the Giants’ new head team physician. He replaces Dr. Russell Warren, who had been the team physician since 1984.
