S’bucks protest a pig deal

- Sarah Trefethen

Animalrights protesters took over a Starbucks on Seventh Avenue and Broadway to protest the treatment of cows and pigs for items used on the coffee chain’s menus.

Several demonstrators held pictures of dead barnyard animals and signs that read, “Starbucks, it’s blood on your hands” and, “We are all animals.” One woman held up her hands, which were covered with fake blood.

“Joshua grew inside his mother’s belly for nine months, just like a human baby,” another woman said, referring to a photograph of a baby calf.

Organizers say they picked Starbucks to draw attention to the dairy industry’s practices and low wages of coffeeplantation workers.

The midday interruption frazzled customers.

“We were just about to leave, but since they’re going, we can stay,” said one coffeecraving woman.

Minutes later, the animalrights organizers spilled onto Seventh Avenue, chanting, “It’s not just coffee, it’s blood on your hands!” and “It’s not just a tuna sandwich, it’s blood on your hands!”

Some Starbucks fans actually thought twice about their message.

“I partially agree with them,” said Chaya Gitlin, 26, of Crown Heights, while she was waiting for her strawberrybanana soy smoothie. “Honestly, I think they look malnourished.”
