Trump’s crowning victory, sells pageant
Donald Trump made a quick profit on Monday flipping the Miss Universe Organization to a Hollywood talent agency — just days after the developer gained complete control of the company that sponsors three beauty pageants.
Terms of the sale to WME/IMG were not disclosed, but Alan Garten, general counsel at the Trump Organization, told The Post that Trump “did very well.”
Trump gained full control of Miss Universe just last week when he bought from NBCUniversal the 51 percent of the company — which includes the Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants — that he didn’t already own.
NBCU had an incentive to sell after it pulled the plug on broadcasting the pageants in June following the harsh comments Trump made about Mexican immigrants while announcing his candidacy for the White House.
Trump has threatened legal action against NBCU for its actions. He obtained the 51 percent stake last week “as part of the settlement of his litigation against NBCUniversal,” WME/ IMG said in a statement on Monday.
Trump had acquired 100 percent ownership of the Miss Universe Organization in 1996. He sold a stake in the company to NBCUniversal once the Peacock Network began broadcasting the Miss Universe and the Miss USA pageants in 2003.
WME/IMG already produces more than 20 fashion weeks a year in such cities as Berlin, New York and Sydney. It has also served as an executive producer of the Miss Universe competition, which is distributed in more than 190 countries and seen by more than a halfbillion people a year.
Trump claimed the pageants were in “serious trouble” when he first bought them but are now successful.
The Post’s Page Six on Aug. 25 exclusively identified WME/IMG as being “among the top bidders” for Miss Universe.
