‘Star Wars’ lightsaber not just kids’ play

The hottest toy introduced this month ahead of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has nothing to do with kids.

Amid the hundreds of filmrelated merchandise flooding stores in advance of Disney’s December blockbuster, a $200 Hasbro lightsaber — that glows red and makes a crackling sound — is getting the most attention, according to TTPM, a consumer toy review Web site.

The Black Series Kylo Ren Force FX Lightsaber, aimed at the 18 and older crowd, was the No. 1 item out of 5,000 viewed on TTPM’s website in September.

Ebay has already sold many of the muchindemand lightsaber for $300 and up — with one selling for as much as $1,088 a week ago.

The lightsaber is among nine toys that sell out the most in stores, TTPM said.

The others include a $180 Legendary Yoda figure and a Millennium Falcon that sells for up to $128, both from Spin Master.

The majority of the hot items sell for at least $50 and up.

This year alone, the Star Wars economy is expected to generate retail merchandise sales of about $1.3 billion.

The movie, due out Dec. 18, could bring in a similar amount at the box office.

“Star Wars has always been popular, but if the movie is great, and the characters are well received the sales will continue to be hot,” said Jim Silver, chief executive of TTPM.

About 90 percent of the merchandise associated with the movie has already been rolled out, but more will be introduced after the movie is released.

“The Force Awakens” pushed forward the usual November/December start of the toy buying season into September.
