Gang Green geared to keep Eagles O grounded
The Jets are looking to make history Sunday. The Jets are 0-9 against the Eagles all-time, the only team they never have beaten.
If the Jets ever were going to beat the Eagles, this feels like the perfect setup. The Jets are 2-0 and rolling after a big road win Monday in Indianapolis. The Eagles are 0-2 and reeling, managing just seven rushing yards last week in a home loss to the Cowboys.
Then again, this could be the dreaded trap game. Jets coach Todd Bowles did his best this week to make sure his players’ heads did not get too inflated after beating the Colts, and they realize the Eagles are not as bad as their record indicates.
“We could easily be 0-2, so it’s a must win for us, too,” Bowles said. “We don’t overlook anybody. We’ve only played two games. The season is young. We know they’re powerful. We know they’re physical, we know they’re explosive. We just have to go and try to play our game.”
The Jets looked like world beaters on defense last week, frustrating Andrew Luck and forcing five turnovers. Their 10 turnovers in the first two weeks is a franchise record. The offense was not spectacular but did enough to win with wide receiver Brandon Marshall looking like a beast and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick looking more than capable of leading the team.
“The defense had a lights out game on Monday night, but as an offense we still have so much work to do,” guard Willie Colon said. “When you have five turnovers and only score 20 points, that shows on the offensive side we weren’t clicking as well as we could have. Especially up front I was disappointed we didn’t get [Chris] Ivory a better day.”
The Eagles entered the season with Super Bowl aspirations, but so far it has been nothing but frustration. Eagles coach Chip Kelly made a bunch of risky personnel decisions this offseason that are not working out right now. Kelly’s hand-picked quarterback Sam Bradford looked terrible against Dallas. Ex-Jet Mark Sanchez is the backup and could see time if the Jets stymie Bradford in the first half.
Sanchez was the Jets’ quarterback the last time they won three games in a row back in 2011, so a win today would be a sign that things truly have turned around for the team. It also would be their first 3-0 start since 2009 when Sanchez was a rookie.
