A-Rod’s bat finally beginning to stir

- By GEORGE A. KING III

A groundrule double Saturday and a pinchhit single Sunday don’t mean Alex Rodriguez has totally shaken off his lateseason slump.

However, they are small signs Rodriguez is ready to get hot during the final week of the season.

After Rodriguez’s groundrule, RBI double was the difference in Saturday’s 21 win over the White Sox, Rodriguez hit a ground single up the middle in the seventh inning of Sunday’s 61 victory. The hit moved Greg Bird to third and stopped a 0for13 Yankees slide with runners in scoring position.

“Just a day for him, playing mostly lefties today,” said manager Joe Girardi, who used Rodriguez to hit for Brendan Ryan. “I have to give him a day somewhere, so I figured I would do it [Sunday]. And we’re going to see three lefties in the next four days, so I figured [Sunday] was the best day.’’

Despite two hits in his last two atbats, Rodriguez is in a 6for37 (.162) slump.

Carlos Beltran was Girardi’s DH for the seventh time and went 1for4.

Girardi also didn’t start third baseman Chase Headley, who had started the previous 16 games and 34 of 35. Ryan started for the fifth time and went 1for2 with a walk. Headley provided a pinchhit double in the Yankees’ tworun eighth.

Dellin Betances and Bryan Mitchell each recorded a strikeout and upped the Yankees’ relievers’ strikeout total to 575, the most ever by an AL bullpen. The MLB record is 589 by the Rockies in 2012.

“The strikeouts are extremely important, especially when you get late into games and they’re close,” Girardi said. “A lot of times you need a strikeout. There’s a runner on third and less than two outs. You need a strikeout and all three of those guys really have the ability to do that.’’

Girardi was talking about Justin Wilson, Betances and Andrew Miller, who have 286 of the bullpen’s 575 strikeouts.

Sunday’s 61 win over the White Sox was the 9,999th in Yankees history. One more will make the Yankees the first AL team to reach 10,000 wins. ... Sunday’s attendance of 38,690 put the Yankees at 3,036,446 for the season. It’s the 17th straight season the Yankees have gone over 3 million.
