Meeting of the Minds: Putin and the Prez Talk Syria

THE ISSUE: President Obama and Russia’s Vladimir Putin’s disagreement over Syria at the United Nations.

-

l In Tuesday’s Post, the picture showing President Obama and Vladimir Putin clinking glasses says it all (“Just Shove It Up Your Glass!” Sept. 29).

Obama’s face is basically saying, how could you? — a pathetic pout from a young child.

Putin’s cheshire grin says he’s thankful Obama is so weak. Just like a cat who ate a bird.

There’s no doubt who won again, who is now the superpower and who calls the shots in our foreign affairs.

The United States is in a position of defense and weakness, making our moves after Putin makes his.

How did we let it get so bad?

Our next president will have a tough task of regaining our strength and making the moves that are needed to counteract against Russia, China and Iran.

What a mess Obama has made. Bob Robustelli Stamford, Conn.

l It’s wellknown that Obama doesn’t listen to members of Congress or his advisers, but does he even listen to himself ?

Obama was incredulous when Putin suggested that we need to support Syria’s Bashar alAssad, who drops barrel bombs to massacre innocent children, and because the alternative is surely worse.

Yet Obama has no problem supporting the Iranian theocracy that has called for the massacre of all innocent children, men and women in Israel. What alternative is worse than that?

l As abhorrent as the actions of Assad are toward the Syrian people, I find myself agreeing with Putin on how to deal with ISIS.

They’re our greater enemy, as they are Russia’s, and to quote an old proverb: The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

A solution that would be acceptable to Putin, and should be acceptable to Obama, is to support the government of Syria and Assad with the goal of combining forces to wipe out ISIS in both Syria and Iraq.

When that has been accomplished, Russia can use its influence to have Assad resign and have new elections held in Syria.

There’s a reason these proverbs stand the test of time. Albert Tapper
