Rather and ‘Truth’

-

DAN Rather helped director James Vanderbilt on his movie “Truth,” about the story that led to the newsman resigning from CBS. “Dan was wonderful,” Vanderbilt told us at Wednesday’s Cinema Society screening at MoMA. “He opened his home and his mind to me. There’s the factual stuff, but even talking about ‘How did this feel?’ ” The director added, “He knew we were going to go away and make the movie we were going to make . . . We would have very much understood if he said, ‘Yeah, keep on walking’ . . . but he didn’t do that and it’s such a credit to him.” CBS has said, “It’s astounding how little truth there is in ‘Truth’ . . . The film tries to turn gross errors of journalism and judgment into acts of heroism and martyrdom.” Mary Mapes, the producer played by Cate Blanchett, said, “If there’s anything that frustrates me about [the criticism], is it’s by someone who hasn’t seen it. I really wish they would see it before they say anything.” Guests Bennett Miller, Donna Karan and Sony Pictures Classics’ Tom Bernard and Michael Barker afterpartied at Armani Ristorante.
