2015 to be the safest year ever: Bratton

- Amanda Lozada and Bob Fredericks

Despite a spike in murders and rapes year to date, 2015 will be the safest year for overall crime in the Big Apple’s history, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton promised Thursday.

“We will end the year with historic low crime. Guarantee it, by the end of this year we will have the best crime year in the history of the city,” Bratton said after 678 new recruits were sworn in at the Police Academy.

Overall crime is down about 3 percent, murders are up 9 percent from 244 to 266 as of Monday, and rapes have risen from 1,027 to 1.081, a 5.3 percent increase.

Bratton said next year could be even safer because the department will have more cops on the street.

“My projection would be we will have a good year next year because we will have a lot more resources to work with along with an already low crime rate,” Bratton said.

And the top cop credited his boss, Mayor de Blasio, for agreeing to add about 1,300 new officers to the department after first opposing any new hires.
