Amazon douses Fire suspiciously

- By JAMES COVERT

So much for Amazon’s early jump on the Apple TV.

The Seattle Web giant said Thursday that the newversion of its Fire TV won’t be in stock again until Oct. 30. It debuted on Monday. Amazon officials didn’t comment on why the Fire TV was no longer available.

On Wednesday, The Post reported on a torrent of negative reviews for Fire TV.

In addition to complaining about software glitches and an uncooperative remote control, users griped that the Fire TV wasn’t userfriendly with videostreaming apps from rivals such as Netflix and Hulu.

The Fire TV’s bumpy start comes before what promises to be a fiercely competitive holiday season for video streaming. This week, Roku unveiled its new 4K streamer. The latest Apple TV is expected to launch this month.

Last week, Amazon Chief Exec Jeff Bezos courted controversy by banning the Apple TV from Amazon’s site.

As of late Thursday afternoon, the new 4K version of the Fire TV had 251 critical reviews versus 150 positive ones.

Separately on Thursday, Amazon launched Handmade at Amazon, a new site for artisanal goods. Shares of artsandcrafts marketplace Etsy tumbled 4.3 percent, to $13.57.

Amazon shares dipped 1.6 percent, to $533.16
