COACH CONNECTION IS MORE THAN ’SKINS DEEP

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

For Jets coach Todd Bowles, seeing that Redskins helmet always will be special, even when he is the opposing coach.

“I’ve done it a lot. No matter how many times you do it, that was the birthplace,” Bowles told The Post this week. “They gave me a chance to play in this league. I’ll never forget that. The people are gone, but I’ll never forget that. That will always be the place I call home.”

The Redskins signed Bowles as an undrafted free agent out of Temple in 1986. He played seven of his eight NFL seasons with Washington, starting at both safety and cornerback. Bowles was a starter on the Redskins’ 1987 Super Bowl team.

Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has six interceptions through four games. Just four quarterbacks in the NFL have more — Matthew Stafford with eight, and Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck and Jameis Winston with seven.

Fitzpatrick and Bowles stressed the importance of protecting the ball better moving forward. Fitzpatrick said after each game he and offensive coordinator Chan

Gailey break down the film on each interception.

“Each one is different, there’s a different scenario,” Fitzpatrick said. “You try to group it into categories. Was this a bad decision? Was it a bad throw? Was it one that [was] tipped at the line and that’s just going to happen? How can we prevent this and make it better next time. ... I’ve got to try to understand why I’m making certain decisions and try to learn from each play.”

Fitzpatrick said he needs to keep working on his decisionmaking.

“[As] an offense, [we] have to continue to work in practice and continue to put a better product out there on the field each and every week and I think we have the right guys to do that,” he said.
