NY is ruff spoken

- Sophia Rosenbaum

The Empire State is a dogloving haven with 88 percent of pet owners talking to their furry friends as if they were human, according to a Siena College poll released Monday.

“We sure love our pets,” said pollster Don Levy. “Virtually all pet owners say that they speak to their pet as if it were a human being at least once in a while with nearly 6 in 10 saying they do so all the time.”

Of the 42 percent of New Yorkers who actually own a pet, more than half — 57 percent — identify as a pooch person. Just 17 percent call themselves cat lovers.

The poll also showed that most people spoil their animals — with just 27 percent of pet owners surveyed spending less than $500 on items ranging from food, vet visits, toys and grooming.

The survey of 800 residents across the state also found that most pets spend their time around the house wherever they want.
