‘Blame Albany’ for class size
Just ahead of a charterschool rally targeting the mayor over school inequality, UFT President Michael Mulgrew on Monday hailed the city for helping to reduce the number of overcrowded classes — while criticizing Albany’s lack of financial support.
Mulgrew acknowledged that reducing class sizes wasn’t a top priority of Chancellor Carmen Fariña.
But he pointed to data showing the number of overcrowded classes dropped to 5,485 this school year — down from 6,447 last year.
Mulgrew criticized Albany for not abiding by a yearsold court decision that ruled the city is owed billions of dollars in additional education funding.
But Leonie Haimson, of Class Size Matters, said the city is just as culpable on the issue.
