Making a Desk (Dis)Appearance

THE ISSUE: A Bronx principal who ordered teachers’ desks to be removed from their classrooms and thrown out.

-

What kind of idiocy is this (“No more desk jobs,” Oct. 18)?

When will the chancellor remove these people who don’t know how to teach but are running schools?

Instead of running around campaigning for Hillary, it’s time for the United Federation of Teachers hierarchy to go back to the classroom and see for themselves what teachers are going through in this city, because their leadership has led them to miserable working conditions.

They’ve long abandoned teachers.

Susan Edelman’s onesided report didn’t explain what led up to principal Donna Connelly’s decisive action, nor did the reporter offer any evidence against this widely used strategy for engaging students more fully in their education.

I couldn’t help but wonder whether Connelly would have been portrayed as a hero, if she had been the principal of a charter school promoting the success of all students by setting clear expectations and implementing a cohesive vision of learning.

What a terrible example of workplace behavior for children.

A Department of Education spokesman inexplicably stated that the furniture was moved “to facilitate better instruction.” Education Chancellor Carmen Fariña needs to say unequivocally that this is conduct unbecoming a principal.
