‘Swelled up’ Harvey will be OK for Game 5
CHICAGO — Matt Harvey might be “sore” and “swelled up,” but the Mets righthander is determined to take the ball for a potential Game 5 of the NLCS on Thursday.
After he threw briefly in the outfield at Wrigley Field on Monday, Harvey’s status was elevated to all systems go. Manager Terry Collins was previously concerned the pitcher might need extra rest after getting drilled by a line drive near his right shoulder in his Game 1 start against the Cubs.
“No flaws. No apprehension in his throwing. No concern on our behalf,” pitching coach Dan Warthen said.
According to a CBS Sports.com report, Harvey’s agent, Scott Boras, recently bought insurance for the pitcher that would give Harvey some financial protection in the event he is injured and can’t pitch or incurs a significant dropoff in production in his comeback from Tommy John surgery.
Harvey has pitched 202 innings this season and Boras wanted the righthander capped at 180. Warthen indicated Jeurys Familia’s workload is not an issue. The Mets closer has made six appearances this postseason totaling 7 ²/₃ innings.
“He is a big horse — he wants the ball every day,” Warthen said. “The beauty of him is lack of pitches when he goes out there.”
Collins said he hadn’t considered a lineup for Tuesday, but didn’t dismiss the idea of Kelly Johnson potentially replacing icecold Lucas Duda.
