Deacons pull upset over Indiana
Bryant Crawford’s driving layup with 3.2 seconds to play gave Wake Forest the lead and the Demon Deacons beat No. 13 Indiana (31) 8278 on Monday in the opening round of the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Crawford had the ball at the head of the key for about 8 seconds before he put his head down and drove to the basket to give Wake Forest (31) the lead for good. After Indiana turned the ball over on a long pass, John Collins made two free throws with .7 seconds left for the final margin.
Wake Forest will face No. 19 Vanderbilt, a 9255 winner over St. John’s, in the semif inals on Tuesday.
Iowa St. 83, Chattanooga 63
In Ames, Iowa, Naz MitrouLong scored 24 points, Georges Niang added 19 and fourthranked Iowa State (30) beat Chattanooga for its third straight win.
Indiana St. 67, Hofstra 66
In St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Khristian Smith had 22 points and nine rebounds and Devonte Brown converted a threepoint play when down by two with 12 seconds left to help lead the Sycamores (32) over Hofstra (32) in the Paradise Jam thirdplace game.
Providence 83, NJIT 76
In Providence, R.I., Kris Dunn had 22 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and seven steals to help Providence (40) beat NJIT (32). Dunn was 6 of 14 from the field, but hit all nine of his free throws.
Florida St. 90, Ohio 81
In St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Dwayne Bacon scored 25 points, Malik Beasley added 22 and Florida State (41 beat Ohio (32) in the fourthplace game of the Paradise Jam.
Kentucky new No. 1
Kentucky, which was No. 1 every week last season, moved up one spot following North Carolina’s loss to Northern Iowa. Kentucky (40) beat thenNo. 5 Duke in the Champions Classic last week and the Wildcats received 59 firstplace votes from the 65member national media panel.
Maryland (30) moved up one spot to second and received the other six firstplace votes.
