Revis, Mangold uncertain vs. Miami

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

The Jets lost two of their top players in Sunday’s 2417 loss to the Texans with cornerback Darrelle Revis and center Nick Mangold exiting early with injuries.

Revis suffered a concussion in the second half and is now in the NFL’s concussion protocol. The Jets do not practice again until Wednesday, but it seems unlikely Revis will be out there then.

“He wasn’t feeling any better today,” coach Todd Bowles said Monday.

Mangold suffered a deep cut on his right hand in the first half that required six or seven stitches, Bowles said. Mangold could not snap the football with the injury.

“We’ve got to see what the pain level looks like this week as far as him being able to snap a ball,” Bowles said.

Mangold did have an MRI exam on his hand Monday that showed no structural damage.

Bowles sounded skeptical Revis could bounce back quickly to face the Dolphins this week.

“Anytime somebody gets a concussion, you’re kind of pessimistic about them the next week,” Bowles said. “Some people recover faster than others. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

The Jets keep starting slow in games and falling behind their opponent. It happened again Sunday with the Jets trailing 2410 before making it close in the fourth quarter.

“Our whole thing is we’ve got to get going earlier on offense,” Bowles said. “We can’t keep coming from behind. In all the games we’ve lost, we’ve been be hind maybe doubledigits and we have to come back and fight at the end. We have to find a way as coaches to get that out of the way and get them started faster earlier.”

Bowles also questioned his team’s mental toughness, saying it has cost it games.

“There were at least three of them we lost where we should have had better mental toughness and execution at the end,” Bowles said.

CB Dee Milliner was inactive Sunday after missing two days of practice last week due to an illness. Bowles said Milliner was healthy enough to play, but was not part of the Jets’ plan.

“He was a healthy scratch,” Bowles said. “He was sick all last week, so he missed a lot of practice time. When he came back Friday, everything was already etched in stone.”
