Green hits milestone in Hofstra loss

In Harrisonbu­rg, Va., Ron Curry had seven 3pointers and a careerhigh 31 points and Shakir Brown had eight of his 15 points in overtime as James Madison defeated Hofstra 9895 on Sunday.

Curry’s 3pointer with 16 seconds left in regulation forced overtime as the Dukes rallied from a 12point halftime deficit. He hit four free throws in the last 38 seconds of OT.

Brian Bernardi had 22 points for Hofstra (168, 84) and Juan’ya Green scored 20 in becoming the fourth player to score 1,000 points at two different Division I schools.

Green, who started his career at Niagara, joined Joe Manning (Oklahoma City-North Texas), Kenny Battle (Northern IllinoisIl­linois) and Gary Neal (La Salle-Towson). Green also is just the 32nd player in Hofstra history to reach 1,000 points with the program.

Iona 75, Niagara 61

In Niagara Falls, Isaiah Williams scored 21 points and visiting Iona used a big first half to defeat Niagara.

Deyshonee Much added 15 points as the Gaels (149, 113 Metro Atlantic) made eight of their 10 firsthalf 3pointers for a 4828 lead. Much and Williams combined for 23 points before the break.

Fairfield 80, Manhattan 70

In Bridgeport, Conn., Curtis Cobb scored 20 points and Matija Milin added a careerhigh 19 points plus nine rebounds to lead Fairfield to a victory.

Tyler Nelson scored 12 points, including the Stags’ last six at the freethrow line in the final 30 seconds. Jerry Johnson Jr. made three 3pointers and scored 11 points for Fairfield (1311, 77 Metro Atlantic Athletic), which shot 53 per cent and split the season series with the Jaspers.

Oregon 76, Utah 66

In Eugene, Ore., Dillon Brooks had 30 points and nine assists, both career highs, to lead No. 16 Oregon.

Chris Boucher added 15 points and Elgin Cook had 12 for the Ducks (204, 92 Pac12).

Iowa 77, Illinois 65

In Champaign, Ill., Peter Jok scored 23 points and Jarrod Uthoff added 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 5 Iowa.

Jok took over early in the second half, scoring seven of the first 10 points for Hawkeyes (194, 101 Big Ten) and led them to a 4836 lead with 16:48 to play.

SMU 92, South Florida 58

In Tampa, Fla., Shake Milton scored 22 points and Nic Moore added 17 as No. 12 SMU rebounded from its second loss of the season with a rout.

Miami 75, Georgia Tech 68

In Atlanta, Sheldon McClellan scored 22 and Ja’Quan Newton hit a 3pointer to lead No. 17 Miami to its fifth win in six games.

In a game that was tight all the way, the Hurricanes (184, 73 Atlantic Coast Conference) were clinging to a 6360 lead with the shot clock running down when Newton hurled up a desperatio­n shot from the corner with 1:49 remaining and hit nothing but net.
