Veep pick is on hold until July

Donald Trump said Tuesday he had narrowed his list of potential running mates to “five or six people,” all with deep political résumés, but that he would not let the cat out of the bag until the GOP’s July convention in Cleveland.

“I have a list of people that I would like,” Trump said, adding that he had not ruled out New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a key early supporter who was named the head of his transition team a day earlier.

The ex-“Apprentice” star said he wants a veep with a strong background in government and politics to help him push his agenda through what may be a reluctant Congress.

“We don’t need another business person,” Trump said.

He also said choosing a person who had previously held elected office would help with the vetting process.

“For the most part, they’ve been vetted over the last 20 years,” he said.

One person definitely out of the running was Marco Rubio, who told reporters Monday he wasn’t interested, which Trump mocked.

“It is only the people who were never asked to be VP that tell the press they will not take the position,” Trump slapped Rubio in a tweet Tuesday.

Trump has named one of his most-trusted aides, Corey Lewandowski, to lead the selection process.
