Girardi: Headley’s back not an issue

- By DAN MARTIN

Chase Headley doesn’t have an extra-base hit in 98 plate appearances on the year, but Joe Girardi said he was sticking with the embattled third baseman.

The manager also said he believes Headley is healthy, despite a lack of production dating back to last September. Girardi insisted he’s not concerned Headley is dealing with any back issues.

“I would if I saw him in the training room,” Girardi said. “Physically, he has no complaints besides hitting [foul] balls off his feet.’’

Headley did come up with a run-scoring single in Tuesday’s 10-7 win over Kansas City, his first RBI since April 7, but that was his lone hit of the night and the Yankee Stadium crowd let him hear it.

Still, Girardi doesn’t have any plans of making a change at the position.

“We believe in him,’’ Girardi said. “He has a track record, too, and this is not who he is. We are going to be patient.’’

They have little choice. In addition to the 32-year-old Headley being in the second year of a four-year, $52 million deal, the backup third baseman is Ronald Torreyes.

There isn’t an answer at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with Rob Refsnyder and Donovan Solano splitting time at third.

The already battered lineup took another hit Tuesday when Mark Teix

eira sat out with neck spasms he said began in Baltimore. He hopes to play Wednesday.

The injury “probably” contributed to his recent woes at the plate, according to Teixeira, but he added: “That’s not an excuse, because I haven’t had a good month.”

Teixeira is hitless in his past nine at-bats.
