Stanton puts on a show

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

That didn’t look like a .226 hitter

ian carlo Stanton entered Tuesday night struggling to find his swing, but he finished it looking every bit like one of the best sluggers in the sport.

Stanton personally wrecked the Mets’ five-game winning streak, homering twice and driving in all five Marlins runs in a 5-2 victory at Citi Field.

The sculpted right fielder also saved a run with a nice sliding catch in the seventh inning, robbing Juan Lagares of a potential run-scoring single. But he did his most damage at the plate, where he produced his first multiplehome-run game of the season and fourth multi-homer game against the Mets in his career.

He gave the Marlins the lead for good in the seventh inning, blasting a two-run home run off Mets starter Steven Matz, staying back on a 1-2 changeup that stayed up in the zone and was projected at 436 feet with an exit velocity of 115 mph, according to Statcast.

“I threw him a changeup because he hadn’ t seen that today,” Matz said. “The ball was up and he put a good swing on it.”

An inning later, Stanton sent an Erik Goeddel fastball into the second deck in left field, another rocket, this one a three-run shot that drew oohs and aahs from the home crowd. Goeddel grooved a 3-1 fastball that Stanton absolutely crushed, this one 424 feet, according to Statcast. Collins opted not to use setup man Addison Reed in that situation because the bullpen was short on available arms.

“He’s a great hitter. He’s got great power. He’s not hitting very good [right now],” Collins said. “You got to make a pitch. We didn’t make the pitch. He’s the most powerful guy in the league, but you got to make pitches. You can’t give in [3-1]. You have to make the pitch you’d make as if the game was on the line, and we didn’t make it.”

The homers were similar to some of the long balls from Mets slugger Yoenis Cesepedes, though neither reached the third deck, like Cespedes did last week against the Cubs.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” Cespedes said of the two homers that went an estimated 860 feet combined. “I know Stanton can hit it further than me.”
