Top pick Lee signs

The Jets signed first-round pick Darron Lee on Wednesday, getting it done just before their first practice Thursday, according to a source.

Lee, 21, and the Jets agreed to a fouryear, $10.2 million contract, which is what is slotted for the player taken with the 20th pick overall. The deal also includes a team option for a fifth year, which is standard for first-round picks.

The former Ohio State linebacker is expected to begin the year behind veteran Erin Henderson, though he likely will play a good amount in the team’s sub packages.

The deal took a while because the Jets and Lee were haggling over guaranteed money in the fourth year. The Jets ended up giving him the full guar- antee, according to a source, but the team has protection to recoup money if Lee is cut for a non-football reason.

The Jets don’t face the Patriots until November, so they won’t face New England during Tom Brady’s fourgame suspension, but can it help the team possibly win the division?

“I think in this business it’s all about taking care of your own,” Henderson said. “If he’s suspended for four games and we go 0-4 in the first four, does it matter that he’s suspended for four? We’ve got to take care of our end and make sure we do our job and make sure we do our part and what’s happening in New England will happen.”

Mangold said he remembers 2008 when Brady missed nearly the entire season with ligament tears in his knee, but the Patriots still went 11-5 with Matt Cassel at quarterback.

“Brady got hurt the one year and they still did pretty well. I don’t think it particularly matters,” Mangold said. “We have to do our part and put the work on and go out there and play the games.”

The Jets waived RB Zac Stacy with a failed physical designation. Stacy is coming back from a broken ankle he suffered last November. To take his spot, the team signed RB Bernard Pierce, who spent three seasons with the Ravens before playing last year with the Jaguars. … Center Nick Mangold received a $2.4 million roster bonus Wednesday when he reported to training camp.
