‘Moment of reckoning’

Clinton: Work together

- By DANIEL HALPER Additional reporting by Bob Fredericks Washington Bureau Chief

PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Clinton delivered a historic speech Thursday night that savaged Donald Trump, while laying out her own lofty vision for uniting the nation under another Democratic administration.

Speaking on the final night of the Democratic convention, she declared that the country was at a dangerous crossroads.

“America is once again at a moment of reckoning. Powerful forces are threatening to pull us apart. Bonds of trust and respect are fraying,” said Clinton, 68, the first woman nominated for president by a major political party.

“It is up to us. We must decide if we will all work together so we can all rise together.”

Trump, she said, was not up to the challenge of combating terrorism or dealing with an international crisis.

“He loses his cool at the slightest provocation. A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man you can trust with nuclear weapons,” Clinton warned, mocking her Republican rival’s claim that he knows more about ISIS than America’s military leaders. “No, Donald, you don’t,” she said. Dispelling the notion that Trump might change his ways in office, Clinton added:

“Here is the sad truth. There is no other Donald Trump. This is it.”

She also took aim at Trump’s GOP-convention theme that only he alone could solve America’s problems.

“Really? ‘I alone can fix it?’ ” she asked incredulously.

Clinton acknowledged indirectly that many Americans have issues with her character and trustworthiness.

“I get it that some people just don’t know what to make of me,” she said.

The unity that she promised to deliver was not entirely in evidence at her own convention, where Clinton delegates periodically broke into chants of “USA! USA!” and Hillary! Hillary!” to drown out protests by Bernie Sanders supporters. Clinton also:

Accused Trump of “being in the pocket of the gun lobby,” while saying she had no intention of repealing the Second Amendment.

Slammed her opponent for having his clothing line and furnishings for his hotels made in other countries while he talks about bringing jobs back to America.

Said large corporations should pay their “fair share” of taxes, and not accept tax breaks with one hand while handing out pink slips with the other.

Vowed to support police officers while at the same time reforming the criminal-justice system to rebuild trust between cops and the communities.
