This judge believes life should imitate art. A Manhattan jurist on Thursday asked how “Orange Is the New Black” actress Taryn Manning could claim ignorance of the legal system when her character is stuck in prison.

“It almost defies belief that given who she is . . . she didn’t understand she needed to file some written notice,” said Judge Lucy Billings, referring to Manning’s failure to submit a notice of claim against the city before suing for false arrest.

The actress (inset), who plays Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett on the Netflix hit, wants to sue the city for $10 million because she spent four hours in a holding cell after being accused of violating a protection order.

The accuser was the star’s pal-turned-stalker Jeanine Heller. Manning, 37, was never prosecuted.

She was represented at the time by top criminal defense lawyer Stacey Richmanwhose clients have included Jay Z and Lil Wayne.

Manning needs Judge Billing’s permission to file a late notice of claim after blowing a 90-day deadline after her arrest on Nov. 18, 2014.

City lawyer Kevin Shaffer argued that Manning’s delayed suit would put the city at a disadvantage.

“The fact that a year and 81 days has gone by has put us a year and 81 days behind the eight ball in this case,” Shaffer said.

Billings said she’d likely grant the permission but was doubtful Manning would win her case.

“I didn’t really buy it,” Billings said of Manning’s false-arrest and wrongful-imprisonment claims in her proposed suit.

“Four hours of overall detention? Sounds like no body- cavity search or any kind of physical injury?” the judge asked from the bench.

Manning’s attorney, James J. Franzetti, conceded his client didn’t receive particularly harsh treatment.

Still, he told The Post after the hearing, she had to endure “the act of just experiencing the violence associated with a false arrest.”

Despite his client’s fame , she “has the same rights as an average person,” Franzetti said.
