Cowboys miss on Foles, eye McCown

-

The Cowboys are in no rush to get a veteran quarterback behind Tony Romo, even though executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones has said they want to add one after Kellen Moore broke his right ankle in training camp.

Dallas was in on the pursuit of free agent Nick Foles a day after Moore’s injury in practice Tuesday, but the former NFC East rival in Philadelphia agreed to a deal with Kansas City.

Browns quarterback Josh McCown is reportedly a trade target for Dallas.

McCown addressed rumors of a possible Dallas trade Thursday. He said at Browns camp that he grew up a Cowboys fan, but was keeping his focus on his current team.

For now, the Cowboys will give longer looks to a pair of young players with no NFL experience in rookie fourthround pick Dak Prescott and second-year player Jameill Showers, who spent most of last season on the practice squad. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s power to freely punish Adrian Peterson has prevailed, two seasons after the Minnesota running back became embroiled in a child-abuse case that heightened the dispute over league discipline. A three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Ap- peals ruled Thursday that an NFL arbitrator acted within his rights by upholding Goodell’s six-game suspension of Peterson in 2014.

That came under the personal conduct policy the league toughened up following a brutal act of caught-onvideo domestic violence committed by former Ravens running back Ray Rice.

The Falcons cut rookie free-agent linebacker Torrey Green amid news that Utah law enforcement authorities were investigating allegations of sexual assault made against Green while he was a student at Utah State last year.

“We don’t want anybody connected to the organization who has those kinds of accusations around them,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank said.

Bengals rookie cornerback William Jackson III will have surgery for a torn muscle in his chest injured during practice this week, but could return at some point during the season, coach Marvin Lewis said.

Seahawks fullback/tight end Brandon Cottom ( leg) and tight end tight end Ronnie Shields (ankle) went down with injuries during Thursday’s practice.

Bills linebacker Manny Lawson says he expects to return in time for the start of the regular season from a partially torn pectoral muscle.
