Bratton: Threat of terror will continue

- Daniel Prendergast

Outgoing Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said the threat of a terrorist attack will continue to plague the city long after he is gone. “The issue of terrorism is going to be with us for many years to come,” Bratton told John Catsimatidis Sunday on his AM 970 radio show. “We will have a very seamless transition here in NYC, which is critically important with all the issues we’re going to face.” Bratton said the Big Apple is ahead of many other cities around the world in terms of the counterterrorism strategy that has been implemented since he returned as top cop in 2014.

During that time, the NYPD has shifted focus from the threat of largescale attacks to lone-wolf attacks often perpetrated by ISIS sympathizers.

“London [has] a police force that’s largely unarmed,” he said.

“They’re now going to have over 500 additional officers equipped like our people to be very visible.

“The world is changing, and it’s un- fortunate that terrorism is going to be a significant part of our lives for some years to come.”

In a separate interview, Bratton listed a few of his regrets.

“Regrets — there are several,” Bratton told Bill Ritter during an interview on ABC’s “Up Close.”

“Regrets at the loss of the officers . . . Regrets that the racial tensions in the city — while I think we are on the path to resolving a lot of those issues, I would have like to have been farther along.”
