THE BARK-IT LIST
‘Ugliest’ dog’s last hurrah after diagnosis
Mugly, a Chinese-crested pooch who has won countless hearts as the “World’s Ugliest Dog,” has been diagnosed with dementia, his owner has revealed.
But the homely 12-year-old hound isn’t ready to roll over just yet. Owner Bev Nicholson has written up a heartwarming “bucket list” of activities for him to do while he is still able.
“In January, I started to notice his odd behavior,” said Nicholson, 53, of England. “Mugly’s always been a healthy dog, but all of a sudden, he started staring at the walls for long periods of time and not recognizing his surroundings.
“I just knew something wasn’t right, but I never even contemplated it could be something like dementia,” she said
“I soon realized that time is now precious for Mugly, so I decided to make a fun, lighthearted bucket list for us to complete together before the dementia completely takes hold of him.”
Mugly, who won his ugliest title in 2012, has gotten to work on the list, crossing off sailing, eating ice cream and sitting in a fire engine, the Caters News Agency reports.
“I think his two favorite things so far have been when he went sailing and when he sat in the fire engine,” Nicholson said.
“He’s always loved water, but he’s never been on a boat, so that was great, and he’s always loved riding in things, especially trains, so it was a unique experience to see him in a fire engine.”
His adventures are being chronicled on Facebook, with photos showing him clad in a Hawaiian shirt at the beach and decked out in a tiny firefighting ensemble topped off with a hat.
The wrinkly pup has also received acupuncture, had a massage and gone to a spa while amassing more than 5,000 Facebook followers.
And the tiny geezer isn’t done yet. He still wants to appear in a music video, ride a Harley motorcycle and meet Queen Elizabeth’s corgis, his owner said.
“We will do as much as we can now. Mugly has bad and good days,’’ Nicholson said. “When I can see his old personality shining through again, that’s when we go out on our adventures.”
