Raising Arizona
Trump snags $5M amid immig speech
Donald Trump raised $5 million from online contributors Wednesday as he continued to expound on his opposition to illegal immigration during a speech in Arizona.
“The campaign’s fundraising in August was spectacular thanks to people like you,” Trump said in an e-mail to supporters.
Not everyone is cheering. Some Hispanic Trump backers who were hopeful he might soften his immigration policies are jumping ship after he doubled down on his mass-deportation plans — including Jacob Monty, a member of Trump’s National Hispanic Advisory Council.
“I gave Donald TRUMP a Plan that would improve border security, remove hardened criminal aliens and most importantly give work authority to the millions of honest, hard-working immigrants in the US,” he wrote on Facebook.
“He rejected that tonight and so I must reject him.”
Alfonso Aguilar, the president of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, told Politico he’s also “inclined” to drop out.
Meanwhile, Trump is taking no chances in his appearance Saturday at a black church — preparing scripted answers to previously submitted questions, The New York Times reported.
An eight-page draft obtained by the news paper shows 12 questions that the church’s pastor, Bishop Wayne Jackson, will ask Trump during the session, which is closed to the press.
Trump’s answers were scripted by his aides along with national party officials to ensure they were not offensive to blacks, the paper reported.
The draft includes the wording of answers to questions about police killings, racial tension and the feeling among many black voters that Trump and the GOP are biased.
