Law prof: Trump Is an Old-Style Liberal
George Mason law professor F.H. Buckley argues that Donald Trump is a throwback to “yesterday’s liberalism” of the ’50s and ’60s, far more so than to “yesterday’s conservatism.” As he notes in National Review, it took JFK to realize that taxes were too high and to enact a radical tax cut to spur the economy — which conservatives opposed, fearing budget deficits. And yesterday’s Dems “were strong nationalists” who would’ve opposed open-border immigration policies. They also “would have been horrified to learn that today’s Democratic party makes faithful Catholics feel unwanted.” Indeed, “they believed in the American Dream, the idea that whoever you were, wherever you came from, this was the country where you could get ahead.”
