The Hillary Clinton campaign is taking political stagecraft and scripting to the extreme as it tries to boost its likability-challenged candidate with voters who doubt her honesty.
On Tuesday, a 15-year-old girl was supposedly chosen at random to ask the first question at a Clinton town hall in Haverford, Pa. The teen used the time to bash Donald Trump with a heartrending speech on body image.
“At my school, body image is a really big issue for girls my age,” the girl, Brennan Leach, said, reading off a card she held in her hand. “I see with my own eyes the damage Donald Trump does when he talks about women and how they look.”
“Thank you!” Clinton exclaimed in response, agreeing that Trump “has taken this concern to a new level of difficulty and meanness.”
But Internet sleuths soon found that Brennan, a child actress, is the daughter of a Democratic state senator and attended the party’s national convention in July.
Brennan denied that she had coordinated with the campaign in a CNN in- terview on Saturday but admitted her dad, Pennsylvania state Sen. Daylin Leach, helped her prepare.
But the teen’s loaded question — and Clinton’s excited reaction to it — seemed all too perfectly tied to the campaign’s recent waron-women messaging.
And on Wednesday, a leaked February memo laid out in detail every question and scripted answer for a Clinton interview with host Steve Harvey on his nationally syndicated talk show.
“We coordinated closely with the show’s producers on the script and format,” Clinton aides assured their boss a week before her appearance.
Their 19-page outline covered every possible base — right down to a response on the Chicago native’s pizza-crust preferences.
On the show, Clinton fake-winced as a childhood photo of herself flashed onto a screen and pretended to ponder an audience member’s request for grandmothering tips.
But the staffers’ memo — which was published by The Washington Free Beacon after it appeared on the Web site DCLeaks — proved it was all a sham: Clinton knew the snapshot and the question were coming.
