De Blasé-o’s Blinders

-

Instead of lecturing President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday, Mayor de Blasio should’ve been taking lessons: The nation’s incoming leader, amid the vital work of transition planning, took the time to . . . listen to a prominent critic.

The mayor, by contrast, only sits down with people who disagree with him if they have more power.

De Blasio’s habitual contempt for those he imagines will never be on his side came through loud and clear in his press conference after the Trump Tower tête-à-tête. Asked about the massive gridlock and stifling security on the site, which has area merchants in despair, he tossed off this gem: “I will not tell you that Gucci and Tiffany are my central concerns in life.”

How about the people who in those stores, Mr. Mayor? The ones worried about their jobs? You think the 1 percent?

This comes on top of his dismissal of the Fifth Avenue problem last week. “The holi- days are coming anyway. Midtown is going to be all messed up anyway,” he told reporters. “We’re talking about the next few months, and then Donald Trump is going to be living in the White House.”

“All messed up anyway”? Holiday shopping is what keeps even high-end retailers in the black. If the stores stay empty because de Blasio’s too blasé to find a solution, those jobs could be out the door. Also: Ambulances can’t get through. Yet this is the mayor’s attitude in crisis that doesn’t fit into his little ideological boxes — from soaring homelessness to the deadly Legionnaire’s outbreak in The Bronx: Ignore the facts on the ground until he’s embarrassed into action. Then go back to sleep until it all repeats.

It’s no wonder the new Quinnipiac poll shows that voters think he doesn’t deserve re-election by 49 percent to 39 percent.

He doesn’t care about people like them, and he doesn’t even bother to hide it.
