L’ville eyed for game-plan theft
Another scandal could be coming to Louisville.
In the same year the Cardinals’ basketball program levied a self-imposed postseason ban, the nation’s fifth-ranked football team is now facing ethical questions after Wake Forest discovered documents that show Louisville may have stolen game-planning information from their opponent or had information leaked to them prior to their game against the Demon Deacons on Nov. 12, according to multiple reports.
Wake Forest is investigating the possible security breach after members of the football team found materials left behind by Louisville, which included preparation for plays the Deacons never had run before. Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman said the school isn’t “certain” what happened yet.
“A member of our official travel part found a number of documents pertaining to our Louisville game plan,” Well- man said in a statement. “We are investigating the matter internally to prevent future breaches. I have also notified [ACC commissioner] John Swofford and [Louisville AD] Tom Jurich about this matter.”
Cardinals coach Bobby Petrino, in the third season of his second stint at Louisville, said he has “no knowledge of the situation.”
“We take a lot of pride in the way we operate our program,” Petrino said in a statement. “As I’ve already stated this season, my coaching philosophy has always been to play the game with sportsmanship.”
The day prior to Louisville’s 44-12 win, Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson told Wellman parts of their game plans possibly had been seen by the Cardinals, according to the Winston-Salem Journal, but Clawson wouldn’t comment on what information had been seen by Louisville.
“There was somehow a breach,” Clawson said on a conference call. “We’re trying to figure out what happened.”
