GM mum on Revis’ future with Jets

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan wanted no part of answering any questions about cornerback Darrelle Revis’ performance this season at his midseason press conference Wednesday morning. Maccagnan would not address the $17 million cornerback’s future with the team or evaluate his performance, but he did concede there have been plays on which Revis has not given 100 percent effort this year. “I’m sure there are plays he’d like to have back,” Maccagnan said. “You can watch a lot of other plays where he does give effort and does cover players.” During his nearly 40-minute session with reporters, Maccagnan was hit with an array of questions about Revis. He has a decision to make about the 31-year-old cornerback after the season. Revis is scheduled to be paid $15 million in 2017, something the Jets can’t do with the way he has played this year. “There are glitches in his play, but he has played well at times this year,” Maccagnan said, tiptoeing around Revis. “We still have six games to go. We’ll see how the season progresses, and we’ll evaluate at the end of the season.” Maccagnan praised Revis’ leadership this season, and said he does not regret signing him to a five-year deal in March 2015.

“No. I think when we signed Darrelle, we were very happy based on where he was playing at and what he was doing,” Maccagnan said. “Darrelle, I’m sure he would say this himself, I’m sure there are plays he’d like to have back. We still think Darrelle is a good football player. We do think Darrelle can potentially help us win.”

Maccagnan declined to address any player-contract issues, including how he felt about the $86 million pact the Jets awarded Muhammad Wilkerson.

A few other topics Maccagnan hit on:

Re-signing QB Ryan Fitzpatrick: “I have no regrets about bringing Ryan back. I think going into it, we felt very good about the season Ryan had previously.”

On Todd Bowles’ performance: “We knew there would be adversity along the way, but he’s very consistent and very focused, and I think he has a very good pulse on the team and the locker room. I do think he’s going to be a very good head coach in this league.”

On rookie QB Christian Hackenberg not playing and Dak Prescott, picked two rounds later, starring for the Cowboys: “We look at our player’s development. I don’t think necessarily if a player is playing or isn’t playing necessarily means that’s the player he may eventually develop into. You don’t really know in time. I wouldn’t put it in context with another player. We like Christian. There’s a lot of things we see potential in him.”
