Beau quizzed over pop star’s final days
George Michael’s lover is being grilled by British cops amid fears that the singer died of a drug overdose, it was reported Thursday.
Detectives have been questioning Fadi Fawaz, 40, about Michael’s final hours and about whether the ’80s pop icon may have been on something before he was found dead of heart failure in his Oxfordshire home on Christmas Day at age 53, the Daily Mirror reported.
Meanwhile, The Sun reported Thursday that the Thames Valley Police Major Crime Unit had taken over the investigation and that detectives feared the “Careless Whisper” singer may have taken a lethal dose of illegal or prescription drugs.
In an effort to identify all those the former Wham! star came in contact with in his final days, authorities have ordered a local paparazzi agency to provide them with photos taken near Michael’s home around that time, sources said.
“They want to build up an idea of what George’s last seven days were like and who came and went,” a source told The Sun.
Still, Michael’s death was being treated as nonsuspicious, officials said.
While an autopsy was inconclusive last week, sources said the investigation is “now picking up a bit of speed” and that toxicology tests were being performed.
Fawaz was initially questioned after he discovered Michael’s body, but cops found nothing out of the ordinary with what he said.
Officials told the Mirror that there was no indication Fawaz had done anything wrong and that he was being questioned again to determine if drugs played a role.
“It’s literally putting together the facts and figures about where someone was and the circumstances,” a Thames Valley Police source told the paper.
Fawaz, an Australian-born hairstylist and photographer, has told the Mirror that he fell asleep in his car on Christmas Eve and had not seen Michael the night of his death.
Michael had a well-documented history with substance abuse and, according to The Sun, was treated for crack addiction as recently as 2015.
