Dak: No Cabo vacation for me

Dak Prescott is clear about his pre-playoff plans: No international getaway. No boats. And definitely no Jessica Simpson.

With all the hype surrounding Odell Beckham Jr. and his fellow Giants receivers’ party trip to Miami over the weekend — a 2017 sequel to Tony Romo’s infamous vacation in Cabo a week before the Cowboys lost to the Giants in the playoffs in January 2008 — Prescott appeared ready to shoot down any controversy Thursday when he was asked if he planned to stay in Dallas during the bye week.

“Yes,” the rookie quarterback said, according to ESPN. “Good try.”

With the Cowboys entering the playoffs as the NFC’s top seed and not playing until the following weekend, Prescott’s bye week unsurprisingly drew comparisons to Romo’s nine years ago, the last time Dallas was in this position.

Romo, tight end Jason Witten and linebacker Bobby Carpenter were heavily scrutinized for their couples vacation to Mexico — including Simpson, the pop star Romo was dating at the time — the week before the game against the Giants. It drew even more attention when they lost 21-17 and Romo had a poor showing, completing just half of his passes for 201 yards.

Prescott, who supplanted Romo as the starter when the veteran was injured this preseason, has no interest in recalling that sore point in Cowboys history. When asked how many times he’d heard about Cabo and Miami this week, Prescott had one reply: “None.”

The 23-year-old insisted his plans for the weekend are subdued — perhaps there was a lesson learned when he approached an early December rivalry game against the Giants by going bottlepopping at a club with teammate Ezekiel Elliott, and promptly lost, 10-7 — and he vowed he wouldn’t take as much sun as Romo once did.

“Hanging out and getting rested,” Prescott said. “Yeah, anytime football’s on, I’m going to watch it.”

Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory was suspended for at least a year Thursday for another violation of the NFL’s substanceabuse policy.

It’s the third time this season Gregory has been suspended. The first was a fourgame ban, followed by 10 games on top of that. The latest suspension makes him ineligible for the playoffs, which start Jan. 15 for Dallas, the top seed in the NFC.
