Giants’ Cruz glad no one else can beat New England

- By KEN DAVIDOFF

For sure, a certain pocket of New York exulted in the Patriots’ phenomenal Super Bowl victory on Sunday night. Victor Cruz spoke for that pocket two days later.

“Yeah, it feels pretty good,” the Giants’ wide receiver said Tuesday, before the Thurman Munson Dinner to benefit the AHRC New York City Foundation in Midtown. “Obviously, Atlanta was close, but they couldn’t get the job done. But we obviously want to continue to be the only team to beat them in the Super Bowl.”

The Bill Belichick-Tom Brady Patriots are 5-2 in their seven Super Bowl appearances, and both losses came to the Giants, first in Super Bowl XLII in 2008 and then Super Bowl XLVI in 2012.

“Not taking anything away from Tom Brady,” Cruz said. “He’s my opinion the best quarterback to ever lace them up. So congratulations to him and the entire team on their well-deserved and much-earned Super Bowl victory.”

Cruz, who likely either will be cut outright or asked to take a pay cut by the Giants, said he had not heard anything from the club and that in fact Giants head coach Ben McAdoo canceled exit interviews due to time constraints.

Cruz said he felt no need to pitch the Giants on his value.

“If I need to pitch them now, something’s wrong,” he said.

While he reiterated his desire to stay with the Giants, Cruz said that if he had to look elsewhere, a team’s market size could factor into his decision. Cruz has been very successful in landing endorsements.
