Cowboys are not in hurry to resolve Romo situation

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

INDIANAPOLIS — Cowboys coach Jason Garrett did not have much to say about quarterback Tony Romo on Wednesday.

Meeting with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine, Garrett praised Romo but said he has not spoken to him and is unsure of what the resolution will be with the team’s longtime starter.

“We’ll take his situation as it comes over the next few weeks,” Garrett said. “But being our starting quarterback since 2006 and what he’s done for us both on and off the field, he’s been outstanding. We’ll see how his situation plays out over the next few weeks.”

Garrett said the two last talked right after the season. The Cowboys are expected to move on from Romo after Dak Prescott emerged as their starter last year. The team could try to trade Romo or just release him.

Lions general manager Bob Quinn said he is not happy the NFL excluded Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon from the combine. Mixon was among a group of players not invited because of off-field issues. Mixon was suspended from the Sooners in 2014 for punching a female Oklahoma student in the face. He apologized last month after surveillance video of the punch was released.

“We’re going to leave the door open on Joe. I think it’s really disappointing that Joe’s not here,” Quinn said. “You know, we come here to see the best college football players in college football. So there’s 330-340 some-odd players here, and for him not being here because of those issues, personally I don’t think that’s real fair, because we have a lot of investigation that we want to do on him.

“To get him in one spot for all the teams would have been great. I’m not part of those decisions about how guys are chosen, but I think it is a disappointment that guys like him, and there’s a few others you can put in that category, that we’re going to be chasing around in the months of March and April.”
