Buss fights away bros’ Lakers coup
Don’t mess with Jeanie Buss.
On Friday, the Lakers president and controlling owner fought off an attempted coup by her brothers, Jim and Johnny Buss, who are trying to kick her out of the board room and take over the team.
Attorneys for Jeanie Buss were in Los Angeles County Superior Court seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent the brothers from holding a meeting next week to elect a new board of directors that would not include her, according to the Los Angeles Times. Buss must be on the board to be controlling owner.
The brothers withdrew their meeting request in court after Buss asked for the restraining order.
“This is no doubt the beginning and not the end of the game-playing,” Adam Streisand, Jeanie Buss’ attorney, told the Los Angeles Times. “They don’t have a legal leg to stand on. This is a legal strategy doomed for failure.”
Buss, who took over the team after the death of her father, previously was engaged to Knicks president Phil Jackson for more than three years. They announced they were ending their engagement in December, with Buss calling the Lakers the “love of my life.”
Since then, Buss has implemented a number of sweeping changes to the organization’s structure, most prominently hiring Magic Johnson as president of basketball operations.
Two weeks ago, she removed Jim Buss as vice president of basketball operations; Johnny Buss continues to oversee corporate development for the team.
“Everything she’s trying to do could be undone,” Streisand told the L.A. Times.
A probate court trial to resolve the dispute is scheduled for May.
