Jets GM mum on Decker’s future

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

INDIANAPOLIS — The Jets dumped one veteran wide receiver this week. Now, will they dump another?

After Brandon Marshall’s release on Thursday, now all eyes shift to Eric Decker, who turns 30 on March 15 and has a salary cap number of $8.75 million in 2017.

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan would not say whether Decker, who is coming off of hip and shoulder surgeries, would remain with the team, but indicated nothing is imminent.

“Right now, Eric’s under contract,” Maccagnan said. “Our goal is to get him healthy and evaluate how he comes back off the injuries and go from there.”

Maccagnan said he anticipates Decker being ready for the start of the season. He already is running.

The Jets have made a dizzying number of moves this week, leading to questions about whether there are more to come. Decker, safety Marcus Gilchrist and cornerback Buster Skrine all could be candidates to be cut. But Maccagnan hinted the Jets may be done with the big roster trims with free agency opening Thursday.

“I think we’ve made quite a few moves,” he said. I’m not going to speculate on whether we’re going to make more or not. I would say most of the major moves we would make have been made.”

Maccagnan would not say whether Marshall asked for his release, as some have reported, or the Jets just decided to dump him. But when he spoke about the decision, it sounded like the Jets were the ones who initiated it.

“It was a football decision,” Maccagnan said. “I think where we are as an organization, we felt like we had some good young receivers coming up behind him.” The Jets are expected to try to trade DL Sheldon Richardson. Maccagnan did not rule it out.

“I think the D line always comes up because we do have a bit of a surplus there, a wealth of talent, but Sheldon’s a very good player for us, too,” he said. “We’ll see how this thing plays out.”
