Marshall: Hackenberg can be starter for Gang Green

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

New Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall had some things to say about his former team, the Jets on Friday.

One of them was a positive forecast for second-year quarterback Christian Hackenberg. Marshall was asked if Hackenberg can start during an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show.”

“I definitely can see him starting a game this year,” Marshall said. “I can see him going into camp starting. Bryce Petty made a 40- to 50-percent jump from his rookie year to his second year. If [Hackenberg] can make that kind of jump, there’s definitely going to be a competition in camp, I can tell you that.”

The Jets released Marshall last week after two years with the team. He quickly signed a two-year, $11 million deal with the crosstown Giants.

The Jets are in the market for a quarterback at the moment and one of the players they have interest in is Jay Cutler, who played with Marshall in Denver and Chicago. The two butted heads with the Bears and Marshall said he “wouldn’t have been comfortable” with Cutler joining the Jets if he remained with the team.

Marshall did refute the idea that Cutler could not play in New York because he does not have the right temperament.

“He has the perfect personality for it,” Marshall said. “He couldn’t care less what anybody says. He’s going to do things the way he wants to do things. He knows who he is and he’s comfortable with that. I think it’s the guys who struggle with their personality and their identity who can really lose themselves in that New York market, so I really think he has the perfect personality.”
