Cancer ravaged DA’s mind: ADA

- By EMILY SAUL

The late Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson “was not of sound mind” during his final months in office, one of his former top prosecutors told The Post on Tuesday.

Marc Fliedner also said Thompson’s stunning decision last year to recommend no jail time for a killer cop was among the “bizarre” changes he observed in his former boss.

“Suddenly, a principled man . . . was doing and saying things that were not reflective of who he truly was,” said Fliedner, who is among several candidates challenging acting District Attorney Eric Gonzalez for the Democratic nomination for Brooklyn DA.

Fliedner’s comments echo those made by Thompson’s mother, Clara Thompson, who has claimed in court papers that her son was left “incoherent” and “delusional” from ag- gressive medical treatment after his colorectal cancer “metastasized to his brain.”

Thompson (inset) hid his battle with cancer from the public until Oct. 4, five days before he died.

“DA Kenneth Thompson was not of sound mind in the final months of his life,” Fliedner said.

Fliedner won a manslaughter conviction against NYPD cop Peter Liang for the 2014 accidental shooting of Akai Gurley in a darkened housing-project stairwell.

He said Thompson decided in March 2016 to recommend that Liang be sentenced to probation, although he faced up to 15 years in the slammer. Liang’s conviction was later downgraded.

Fliedner said he had wanted Gurley’s relatives to “be involved in the process” — which Fliedner insisted “Gon- zalez was directly a part of ” — but they instead found out from news radio.

Fliedner alleged: “Gonzalez was aware of the basis for [Thompson’s] erratic behavior, but he did not inform others and did nothing to mitigate it.”

Fliedner also blasted Gonzalez’s decision to bar Clara Thompson from a since-postponed event naming a conference room after her late son due to her estate feud with Thompson’s widow, Lu-Shawn Thompson.

“You can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat someone’s mother,” Fliedner said.

A Gonzalez spokeswoman said Fliedner’s “attempts to tarnish the legacy . . . of DA Thompson and to take advantage of what should be a private family matter for his own political purposes are shameful.”
