HEY IT’S A ‘BRANCH’

Raccoon wangers into a Queen bank

- By DAVID K. LI

Someone called the cops on this masked intruder.

An adventurous raccoon somehow got inside a Chase bank in Forest Hills, Queens.

“I was just walking into my apartment and to the right is Chase, and I saw this raccoon. That was so strange,” neighborhood resident Marc Elkaim told The Post on Tuesday.

Elkaim, 50, snapped this adorable picture (above) of the raccoon at about 8:30 p.m. Monday. The critter wasn’t at all spooked by its strange surroundings.

“It was warm inside and probably felt comfortable,” Elkaim said.

“It was making its way up the chair on the branch representa- tive’s desk and into the window to see us.”

Elkaim called 311, which transferred him to a disbelieving 911 dispatcher. Elkaim didn’t stick around to see what happened, but the critter was picked up by a licensed wildlife removal service — and looked very sad, indeed, inside a cage (right).

Elkaim theorized the raccoon got inside when the after-hours cleaning crew entered the bank, and took a snooze downstairs where the safe-deposit boxes are.

“I know they’re nocturnal, so maybe he was down there and came up later,” he said.

The bank was closed Tuesday because of the bad weather, and reps for Chase could not be reached for comment.
