UFT’s hiring ‘bias’

- Julia Marsh

A black employee of the United Federation of Teachers Welfare Fund says her boss promoted less-qualified white men over her.

Stephanie D. Howell was “treated less favorably than similarly situated employees because of her African-American race,” according to her Manhattan Supreme Court suit.

Howell, a $70,000-a-year executive assistant, was passed over for multiple promotions in 2010 even though she had recently received her MBA and the eventual hires never even graduated from college.

A pharmacy prescription assistant and dental supervisor were later canned for watching porn and “aggressive behavior,” the suit says. They were replaced by another white male, according to court papers.

When Howell complained about the alleged discrimination, supervisor Arthur Pepper called her “an angry woman” who “should take medication,” the lawsuit claims.

Pepper denied the allegation.
