’Roid to rock on by

- Joe Tacopino

It’s not Earth-shattering. An asteroid will zoom past our planet this month, but scientists are promising earthlings that the space rock will not smash into the Earth and kill everyone.

NASA said the “relatively large” asteroid will fly past Earth on April 19, but will miss the planet by about 1.1 million miles.

“Although there is no possibility for the asteroid to collide with our planet, this will be a very close approach for an asteroid of this size,” NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said.

The asteroid, estimated to be about 2,000-feet long, was discovered in 2014 by astronomers with the Catalina Sky Survey at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

The space boulder is expected to become visible after April 19 when it’s expected to brighten and become visible through telescopes for one or two nights.

The fly-by is the closest an asteroid has come to Earth for at least the past 400 years.

And scientists don’t expect another this close for at least the next 500 years.
