ETC.: Long Island’s Weidman loses via controversial TKO
Gegard Mousasi stopped Chris Weidman by TKO in the second round of a confusing conclusion to a middleweight bout at UFC 210 on Saturday in Buffalo. Mousasi stunned Weidman’s with two knees to the head, leading to a stoppage. The referee gave Weidman a recovery period because he thought the fighter had both hands on the canvas, which would make the second knee illegal. Mousasi’s first knee was legal, though replays seemed inconclusive on Weidman’s hand placement on the second. Doctors stopped the fight. Daniel Cormier retained his light-heavyweight title by submitting Anthony Johnson in the second round of the main event. In Chicago, Jarid Lukosevicius scored three goals in the second period and Denver beat Minnesota Duluth 3-2 for the NCAA hockey championship. Tanner Jaillet made 38 saves as Denver moved into a tie with North Dakota for second with eight men’s hockey titles, trailing only Michigan with nine. Manny Pacquiao will fight Jeff Horn on July 2 in Brisbane, Australia, in a defense of Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title.
