O’ no, Canada

- – Larry Brooks

Let’s just say that if the results of, not only this season series between the Rangers and Canadiens, but of each of the last five, determined anything there would be little reason for the Blueshirts to cross the border for the conference quarterfinals starting in Montreal on Wednesday.

But a 0-2-1 record this year (and an aggregate 3-10-2 over the last five years) reverts to 0-0 when the puck is dropped on Game 1.

Still, the unhappy 2016-17 recaps:

Jan. 14 | CANADIENS 5, Rangers 4.

Henrik Lundqvist, beaten 4-2 at home a night earlier by the Maple Leafs in the first game following the bye week, enters in relief of Antti Raanta to start the second period with a 1-0 lead after the Finn sustains a lower-body injury in the first period. Lundqvist surrenders five goals on 22 shots, including three goals on consecutive shots 1:02 apart midway through the third as the Canadiens overcome a 3-2 New York lead and hang on to win behind Carey Price.

Feb. 21 | Canadiens 3, RANGERS 2 (SO).

Price makes spectacular diving save on J.T. Miller’s right-wing drive off Kevin Hayes’ two-on-one feed in final seconds of overtime, shortly after Lundqvist denies Max Pacioretty on a breakaway. Canadiens then score twice against Lundqvist in five-round skills competition while only Mats Zuccarello beats Price.

March 4 | Canadiens 4, RANGERS 1.

Blueshirts are outplayed throughout essentially the full 60 minutes of this one, falling behind 3-0 by the second intermission. Chris Kreider gets one from in front early in the third period, but that’s the extent of this one in which Price comes out on top of Lundqvist again.
