Weird BUT true

Tiny Whiteclay, Neb. — population 12 — is being forced to go dry.

The speck of a town is home to four liquor stores that sell 3.5 million cans and bottles of beer annually to residents of the nearby Pine Ridge Indian reservation.

But Nebraska state liquor officials, citing high alcoholism rates at Pine Ridge, shut down the stores, effective this past Sunday. It’ll take at least a week for a court to rule on the stores’ appeal.

This drug deal was dead on arrival.

Customs agents recently stopped a hearse traveling near Tombstone, Ariz., and found 67 pounds of marijuana stashed in the casket — along with animal manure intended to throw off drugsniffing dogs, officials said.

The 28-year-old American driver was arrested over the pot, worth an estimated $33,000, authorities said.

Only a real pig would dump this cute critter.

A Kansas woman opened her mailbox to find an abandoned guinea pig inside.

The animal shelter in Lyon County named the creature “Rosita” because of her red eyes and put her up for adoption. Her original owner was located and will likely face misdemeanor animal cruelty charges, officials said.

Don’t allow this animal into the zoo.

The Detroit Zoo was temporarily closed on Monday when a coyote was spotted on the grounds in Royal Oak, Mich. The zoo was reopened after the coyote moved on.

When animal-welfare rescuers near Cairo, Ill., were called to a home with 33 cats inside, they feared the worst.

But instead of a hoarding situation, they found all the felines in top physical shape — with medical records and even journals describing each one’s likes, dislikes and daily activities.

The cats belonged to Loma Kenner, 65, who died in a traffic accident.

“This woman truly cared about these animals,” said Christy Anderson, executive director of Wright-Way Rescue.
