What May Day Protesters Tell Us About the Far Left

THE ISSUE: May Day demonstrations across the nation that turned into riots in Portland, Ore. and Olympia, Wash.

One of the saddest sights I’ve seen was the hordes of May Day protesters screaming at the top of their lungs against President Trump and the Republican Party (“May Day mayhem,” May 2).

May Day, originally a happy affair across early America, observed to herald a new season of spring, has been turned dark and dour by socialist and communist demonstrators.

The May Day protesters, a ragtag bunch, are for open borders and legal drugs. They’re antihate only as long as you agree with their demands.

The protesters should appreciate that they have the right to protest. If their preferred form of government took power, they would lose it. Robert W. Lobenstein Brooklyn

In my lifetime, the ersatz “May Day” holiday has been ignored by even the most liberal media as nothing more than a day for radicalleft propaganda.

Rather than try to recover the trust of Middle America after Trump won the election, journal- ists decided to cover May Day as if Americans have always observed the celebration of communism.

If the left assumes the rest of us will follow like sheep, the liberal bubble is even worse than we suspected. Paul O’Keefe Union City, NJ

I remember a time before the 1970s when May Day was a day for parades and celebration of The Blessed Mother by the Catholic Church. It’s a shame our nation has sunk so low that May Day is full of riots, assaults, arson and chaos.

Trump is right — he did inherit a mess. Americans who play by the rules will only take so much. We need to take a strong stand for a lawful society. Enough is enough. Al Marvel Scotia

There were massive May Day marches protesting Trump in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and elsewhere. But why weren’t there marches in hundreds of smaller US cities? Because non-marchers have jobs. JR Cummings Manhattan
